North Carolina State Universities And Colleges – North Carolina State University recently received $16 million from the state government to build a sports facility and a sports car on campus. The funding, which came from a program to grow esports in the state, will be used to build a $12 million arena that is expected to be the largest college sports facility in the United States.
“They gave us $12 million to build a facility that can handle esports activities,” said Marc Hoit, vice chancellor for information technology. “Then another $4 million to build what they call a ‘mobile arena,’ which is basically a truck that can go anywhere in the state and take a short-term competition or activities like that.”

Following the development of a master plan under the direction of Claude McKinney, dean of the School of Design, the first building was completed and occupied in 1989. The first corporate company, ABB, moved in during 1991. The same year, the College of Textiles moved to the Ctnial Campus . In 2000, the Ctnial Biomedical Campus was established. Starting in 2002, the Faculty of Engineering began moving to the Ctnial Campus.

Three of NC State’s colleges have a significant physical presence on the Ctnial Campus: the Wilson College of Textiles, the College of Engineering, and the College of Veterinary Medicine. In addition, the Gold LEAF College of Engineering’s Graduate School and Biomanufacturing Training and Education Cter (BTEC) are located on campus. During the academic year, approximately 3,400 students attend classes on campus. With the completion of Fitts-Woolard Hall, a 225,000-square-foot engineering innovation center, the Ctnial Campus now includes the university’s academic and research offerings in tire engineering.
Around 75 corporate, government and non-profit organizations are located on the Ctnial Campus. To lease space on the property, a potential “partner” must have some programmatic connection to NC State, such as research collaboration with a faculty member or use of students for internships or part-time work. In fact, about a third of the partners are early-stage or early-stage companies, many housed in Ctnial’s collaborative incubator, Raleigh Founded. Another 20% are research and development units of large corporations, and the remainder are small businesses, state and federal agencies, and nonprofit organizations. Current partners include Hitachi ergy, the US Department of Agriculture, IBM, LexisNexis and the National Weather Service regional office. Ctnial Campus is also home to Ctnial Campus Magnet Middle School, a public magnet school in Wake County with 600 students.
The Ctnial Campus houses the Gold LEAF Biomanufacturing Training and Education Cter (BTEC) and the Friday Institute for Innovative Education. BTEC provides education and training in biomanufacturing and bioprocessing involving cGMP-simulated production of high-value biomolecules using cell growth and expression processes, extraction and purification. The Friday Institute conducts educational research, develops educational resources, offers professional development programs for teachers, and serves as an advocate for improving teaching and learning. The Ctnial campus is also home to the FREEDM Systems Cter, one of the last G-III Engineering Research Cters (ERCs) established by the National Science Foundation in 2008 to develop technology to integrate the nation’s power grid with renewable electricity technologies. Finally, the Ctnial Campus houses the Larry K. Monteith Engineering Research Cter, which houses several clean rooms.

The North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts, now NC State, was established by the North Carolina General Assembly on March 7, 1887, originally as a land grant college. The college underwent several name changes and officially became North Carolina State University at Raleigh in 1965. However, the “at Raleigh” part is often omitted by longstanding convention. Today, NC State has a population of more than 35,000 studs, making it among the largest in the country. NC State has historical strengths in engineering, statistics, agriculture, life sciences, textiles and design and offers undergraduate degrees in 106 fields of study. The research school offers master’s degrees in 104 fields, doctoral degrees in 61 fields and a doctorate in veterinary medicine.
