To ensure that excessive tourism does not harm the Acropolis of Athens, Greece plans to impose hourly restrictions on visitors and will allow up to 20,000 tourists a day.
Visits to the Acropolis in Athens, Greece’s most popular archaeological site, will be limited from next month to a maximum of 20,000 per day and subject to various hourly entry restrictions, the Greek government said on Wednesday.

Culture Minister Lina Mendoni said the controls were needed to prevent bottlenecks and overcrowding at the UNESCO World Heritage site. Up to 23,000 people a day squeeze into the monument complex, mostly large groups visiting before lunch.
“It’s a huge number,” Mendoni said in an interview with the Real FM radio network. “Of course, tourism is desirable for the country, for all of us. But we need to figure out how excessive tourism won’t harm the monument.”
The new admission limits will be introduced on a trial basis from September 4 and will come into force permanently from April 1, 2024, the minister said. There will be no limit on the length of visits, although Mendoni said people who come on organized tours or from cruise ships, which account for about 50 percent of the daily visitor count, spend an average of 45 minutes at the site.
Weeks In Greece
A varying number of visitors will be allowed per hour during the site hours from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Work time. Half of the Acropolis’ foot traffic currently comes between 8 a.m. and noon, Mendoni said. Under the new system, 3,000 people will have access from 8 to 9 a.m., 2,000 in the next hour, and the number will vary throughout the rest of the day.
“This measure will address the need to protect the monument, which is fundamental to us, as well as (improving) the experience of visitors to the site,” she added.
Similar restrictions will be imposed on other popular archaeological sites, Mendoni said. The decision on Acropolis followed consultations with tour and cruise operators and was delayed due to Greece’s June 25 general election, she added.
Greek authorities closed access to the Acropolis and other ancient sites at midday last month in the midst of a heatwave that also sparked massive forest fires across the country. They also installed canopies as sun protection for people queuing to see the 5th century BC Acropolis. Temples. Mendoni said the steps would be repeated if necessary.

Besides the many things to do in Athens itself, it is also possible to take a day trip to Meteora and Delphi and/or Olympia, although Meteora is a long day. You can also catch the ferries to the Saronic Islands which are really lovely. We especially like Hydra, which has no cars or scooters and has been home to the famous musician Leonard Cohen and many famous playwrights, the original Bohemians, for more than 20 years. This is a well-priced day cruise that also includes Aegina, Poros, Hydra and Spetses.
