The group went door to door asking, “What kind of community do you want to live in? Why is this important to you? How does this differ from the way you see things now? What are some of the things that need to happen to create that kind of change?” This has been so successful that the entire village now makes decisions based on what they hear on the streets as well as what they do in a boardroom…making Red Hook an even better place to live than it already was.
What else makes Red Hook special? At the top of the list is the row of historic properties on the Hudson River, built by Red Hook’s original founding families (primarily the Livingston/Beekman clan). Most of the houses survive, including Montgomery Place (1805), Rokeby (1811-1815), Edgewater (1820) and Rose Hill (1843). Another well-known historic architectural gem is the Maizefield, built in 1795-97, one of the most beautiful landmarks in the village of Red Hook. You can’t miss it – look for the imposing brick wall that separates the property from the street.
