House For Sale Enfield – A local landmark, the house was home to writers Charles and Mary Lamb in the 1820s, and has a plaque to their memory.
This extraordinary Grade II* listed house is situated in the heart of a beautiful and historic terrace within the Enfield Town Conservation Area. Nestled among a network of streams, trails and quiet streets, the home spans approximately 3,000 square feet. The 16th-century half-timbered hall was expanded in the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 19th century, this was the home of English writers Charles and Mary Lamb. The house, like the rest of the terrace, is backed by a beautiful garden with old English roses and lavender to the front, and a large rear garden with a formal pond. Recently and carefully restored by the current owners using traditional building methods and Herefordshire Green Oak to replace the timber frame, important historical details throughout the house – including fireplaces and Georgian paneling – are retained. The bold colors of Edward Bulmer’s paints have been used with great success. Enfield Chase and Enfield Town stations, both with direct 35 minute services into the City, are less than half a mile away.

The 16th-century house was extended to the rear in the early 18th century, adding two floors, each with ornate paneled rooms. The north end of the facade may have been covered in brick in the late 17th century, while the Georgian sash windows may have been added in the 18th century. Those on the lower floors still have smart exterior windows. At the rear, a double height extension was added; a former schoolroom, now a bright kitchen with French doors opening onto the terrace. The house has a plaque in memory of Charles and Mary Lamb. In fact, Charles often wrote to Wordsworth and Coleridge in praise of the place: “I would do very well… Enfield is beautiful” (1828). In 1827 the brothers moved to Enfield, having spent their summer holidays at this house – then Mrs Leishmann’s residence – two years previously. Charles hoped that the fresh country air and tranquility would benefit Mary, who always suffered from mental illness. In his letters to friends he described the places he knew and loved there, and many of them can still be seen from the city streets to the south, along Church Street in Edmonton. Charles enjoyed visiting various local tourist attractions, writing in 1828 that “We were known at the Horseshoe (early 19).
